NEWS: New Feature: Buffer Count
Hi Gang,
I hope you all had a good weekend. I had a GREAT one. I was unexpectedly forced offline all weekend. I can’t complain, it was awesome.
Unfortunately, the site suffered because I was not scheduled ahead and I had not made other arrangements. That ends today. I’m going to backfill the past 3 pictures, do today’s, and then do tomorrow’s. Starting today, I will add a comment to each day’s post with a not telling how many days I am ahead. (Many of you will recognize this from Schlock Mercenary: I learned this trick from Howard Tayler.)
P.S. Change of plan. I had originally intended to bash out five posts in about 45 minutes, and be a little bit late for work. I can do that if I’m in a hurry. But as I wrote up Friday’s Platycryptus, I realized that I wasn’t willing to “mail it in” five times to make up for being late. Instead, Friday is a post I am proud of, and Saturday, while brief, is a sight better than just saying “don’t know the ID, lol, anyone else know?” This took about 90 minutes, I am now astoundingly late for work, and I still have 2 more posts to do just to be caught up to today.
It feels great to refuse to sacrifice quality. I apologize for getting behind in the first place, and hope you’ll all understand. I’ll write up the remaining two posts tonight, and then start working on writing good quality fill-ahead.

It’s all good. You do what you can do.

I really like the idea of a buffer count, just so we know where things stand.
I think many of us are constantly chomping at the bit to get our bug fix.

I agree that it is more satisfying to take the time to make a good-quality post than to just bash one out in a couple of minutes. I like the buffer count, too. That way, we can tell if things are getting a bit rocky for you, and anybody with good pictures or who is champing at the bit to write up a guest piece (like JFargo’s last week) can offer to help out.
Alternatively, if we start seeing a buffer count of 100+, then we’ll be secure in knowing that you aren’t suffering from a shortage of bugs.
Speaking of buffers, I’d better get cracking on mine. I had built up a 5-post buffer at the beginning of June (which is quite a lot for a once-a-week update cycle), but then my wife had a baby and now it’s back down to zero.

You’re going to want to stop by today. Arachnids galore!
