Hi Jared! Was your caterpillar striped, like this one? http://www.insectpod.com/2008/02/18/woolly-bear/ if so, it's a woolly bear caterpillar, which is very common here in Utah.

I recently caught a caterpillar very similar to this as part of my school project. the only difference is that the orange in this picture is a little darker. I don't know what it is, but I thought the location of mine might be of some assistance. I caught it at an old mining town called Clear Creek, Utah. Not sure if that helps or means anything to anyone, but just thought I'd put it out there.

I've just been trying to sort out some Tiger Moth caterpillars I found around the place, and I think this one is related. It looks close, but not identical, to Ctenucha virginica. It's probably a relative, but my guides tend to concentrate on Eastern and Midwestern caterpillars, so Seattle is a bit out of their range.

Incidentally, does anyone know for sure how to pronounce "Ctenucha"?

It definitely looks cool. I'd almost expect those hairs to be tine-like and stick to you if you press too hard!
