Butterfly

Alan Krause sent in this butterfly photo yesterday. He took this photo on July 25, 2007 at Devil’s Postpile National Monument.
Did you know the Devil had a postpile? I didn’t. That’s probably why they preserved it. It’s the loss of cultural heritage like this that’s bringing us all down.
I don’t have an ID for this bug, any takers? I suspect it’s a skipper of some sort but beyond that I have no clue.
Thanks, Alan!

It looks like a Variegated Fritillary. I’ve got a picture of the caterpillar here, eating some of my wife’s petunias. They mostly eat violets, I’m not sure what it was doing on the petunias.

You don’t think humans are the only ones who go on fad diets, do you?

tceisele: I don’t mean to nitpick but these bugs don’t look ANYTHING alike. Yours doesn’t even have wings!

David Brady: Heh. Thanks for the good laugh.
As I kid I could never grok that one of THESE became one of THOSE. I mean, it just didn’t make any sense.

The Devil also seems to have an awful lot of washtubs (there’s one just a few miles from here, on the lakeshore, and I know I’ve heard of others). He must have a lot of laundry to do after piling all those posts.
AJ: Good point, the question is, what *kind* of fad diet is this? Weight control, or beauty, or long life? Maybe it’s time to start putting together an infomercial . . .
David Brady: Ha ha. Very funny
