When Scott Roche walked past this web, he didn’t think anybody was home, but decided the leaf in the middle made for an interesting picture. And then he discovered how well this spider’s camouflage strategy works!

Imagine dressing up in your camouflage clothing. Since you probably live in a city, your camouflage should look like, say, a brick wall. Now imagine that you need to go hang out in an empty lot so you can ambush your food. (You lead a really weird life, you know that?) Anyway, your brick wall camouflage is going to be useless out there in the empty lot, but then you have the bright idea: you take a brick wall with you, and stand in front of it. Sure, everyone will notice the brick wall… but nobody will see you standing in front of it!

Thanks, Scott, for the great photo! Scott will be back on Monday with an amazing wallpaperworthy photograph.

Is the spider going to eat that blurry person caught in the web? :-D

    Awesome picture!

Okay. Every time I see this picture it looks like something out of Twilight Princess. I keep seeing eyes in a round head with a hat peeking out of a cocoon and the legs become creepy arm things. Anyone else see it?

Thanks guys! I used to be a bit of an arachnophobe, but when I opened my eyes to see how beuatiful these critters can be that fear started to go away. Now I still can’t imagine letting one crawl on me, but progress is progress.
