    I love ladybugs! I have never seen one with such a shiny carapace, you can almost see the reflection of the camera. Did Joe shine her/him up for the photo shoot? How do you tell if its a her or a him?

    That’s a good question: what *are* we seeing reflected in the left wing cover? It almost looks like the reflection of an eye. Is that the camera lens, or a ring flash?

    I was going to say, “at least it doesn’t appear to be an Asian Multicolored Lady Beetle”, but it looks like it is Coccinella septempuctuata, the Seven-Spotted Lady Beetle, which is *also* an imported species. So, either way, it isn’t one of the native lady beetles.

    Oh, and Dave: good to see you back posting, when you missed a couple of days there I was getting a bit worried. Not *too* worried, but a bit.

    I’m pretty sure that was a reflection of the camera and possibly me. I shot this with a Nikon 8800 and I think I had the screen open so that I could frame it up a little easier.
