Gigantorax, Atomic Mutant Fly

Tim Pollard strikes again with this fantastic picture of a large fly. He says it’s about the size of his thumbnail, which probably means it’s only around 10-14mm. But still, what an amazingly colored fly. I keep expecting the back segments to light up one at a time–anyone who had an Electronic Simon game as a kid knows where I’m coming from here.

As with Tim’s previous picture, this one comes to us from Banora Point, NSW, Australia. Thanks again, Tim!

Wow, amazing colors… more what I’d expect from a beetle, not a fly!

Wow, cool! I’ve seen colored flies, but not in a patchwork like that. Neat.

Wow. I wonder if Australians think that, say, North American insects look as exotic as North Americans think the Australian insects look? Probably not, the Australian insects tend to be really something.

Incidentally, when I try to follow Tim Pollard’s web page link, I get an error message that the link on the referring page is incorrect. Is there a typo in the link?

I’ve e-mailed him about the link; hopefully he’ll either fix it or send me a new one.

I wonder the same thing about what Australians wonder. I imagine they’d say our bugs are a bit small and kind of boring… with a bunch of “bonzers” and “g’days” mixed in. :-)

After you made the comment about the Simon I realized that I was doing the same thing. It really is very colorful.
