Weevil Larva

This little larva cruised across my desk a few weeks ago. I’m not actually sure it’s a weevil; we just always called them that. If anybody has a better ID, I’d love to hear it!

Man, it’s hard enough finding a picture a day… let alone an insect picture a day. Big props!

I’d say it’s a carpet beetle larva, like these or this one, based on where you found it, the size, the cylindrical shape, the distinct segmentation, and the bristles. Especially the bristles.

It looks identical to the carpet beetle larva we have here in Alaska. Be careful. They can reproduce fairly quickly and eat a ton of organics. We get infestations of them every few years and it’s very interesting to see the odd sorts of things they’ll end up eating. The cat and the hedgehog both love eating them.

It in indeed a Dermestid (carpet beetle) which you need to be very very afraid of if you have pinned insects in a box somewhere…I’m a collection curator and they were our worst enemy because they are notorious for invading collections and reducing all that pinned protein to dust. Write me if you want to know how to deal with them in a collection.
