Cranefly Face

This is the same cranefly from yesterday. Given the size of this critter (4cm long, 5cm wingspan) I felt that it was necessary to show that it doesn’t have a proboscis. If it did, this would be a “bone marrow mosquito”.

I had to trade off between showing the whole bug and getting a tight closeup on its face; you can use the larger resolution to get a better view.

    Cool site! It’s neat to see these amazing creatures so close. I just wanted to point out, however, that beetles (order Coleoptera) are not true bugs (order Hemiptera), and so your categorization could use some work. I’d suggest something closer to this:

    + True Bugs
    * Stinkbugs
    * Water Striders
    + Beetles
    * Billbugs
    * June Bugs
    * Locust Borers
    * Weevils

    Looking forward to more fun pictures. (I couldn’t get an email through to your address, even after removing the dead bug)

    Dan: Thank you. I was aware of the misfiling but had forgotten to fix it. It is straightened out now. :-) I’ll get the mail server straightened out here soon, too. Someday, anyway…. :-)
