Meet Rhodobaenus tredecimpunctatus, the thirteen-spotted weevil. This one is happily sucking the sap out of a sunflower leaf. If you look closely, you can see several holes punched through the leaf near the weevil as it worked its way down the leaf. You can also see that its beak is actually thrust completely through the leaf in this photo!

I don’t know much about this critter, other than the fact that it didn’t seem to care about me taking its picture from very close up. It was a bit breezy that day, so I had trouble focusing on the leaf blowing back and forth, but the weevil didn’t stop eating, or move, or acknowledge my presence in any way, even when I reached a hand out right next to it to steady the leaf.
