Technically this picture doesn’t belong here, as snails do not belong to class insecta, but I’ve already got pictures of spiders on this site, so I guess a better name for this site would be Arthropod Picture of the Day… except that arthropodpod.com is a dumb name. Oh, and snails aren’t even arthropods.
Snails belong to phylum mollusca, which means to get to insects or arachnids from there you first have to go up one level to kingdom animalia. Yep, the only thing these critters have in common with insects and spiders is that they’re animals.
I still think it’s kinda cute, so here you go. This snail is incredibly tiny: the shell is barely 3mm across.

Wow, I didn’t know snails came that small!

There were actually a few on the same board of a different species. They had pointy conch-like shells, and they were barely 1mm across. My camera just can’t resolve elegantly at that level, so those pics probably won’t make it to the site, but if I ever start a “not quite good enough pictures” section, I’ll put them up.

Wow. I live in Maryland, and we don’t seem to have snails with shells in my area. All we have are slugs, which I believe are snails without the shell. They are disgusting, and a blight on gardens.

Both snails and slugs are pretty productive eaters of vegetation, but I’m not clear if slugs and snails are in the same family.
